Mieko Hara
Born in Oita, Japan, Mieko Hara lived in Tokyo from 1987 to 1996, and freelanced as an illustrator for publishers such as Kodansha, Shueisha, Shogakukan, Sony Music Magazines, Player, Rockin On, Latina and Sony Music and Toshiba EMI recording companies. She has provided art illustration, comics and short stories used in the promotion of prominent Japanese bands and created CD cover art for the U.S. based group Sentinel.
Hara’s process involves daubing and rubbing layers of paint onto a plastic paper surface. On top of that, she layers cut-outs from previous paintings, or found images. Once mounted to a wood panel, she coats the surface with resin to seal it. The result is a shimmering field of color, smears appearing like clouds against a glowing sky. Her circular cut-outs float like planets, or like macroscopic views of what lies beneath them.
Hara left Japan in 1996 and settled in Manhattan from 1998-2001, where she continued her art studies at The Art Students League. After travelling throughout Europe and South East Asia she moved to California in 2003 and studied at the California College of Art.
