The Lure of Ore

May 1st - May 31st, 2014
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 1st, 6-8pm

This show represents a departure for me. Early last year it became obvious that I needed to reboot. It happens every so often and I stop everything to start drawing. Drawing (be it life drawing or doodling) has always been my gateway into new territory.

The large work on paper shown at Gallery IMA and titled 'The Circus with the Monkey', was made in residency at the Vermont Studio Center. My only stipulation was to start drawing and not think about subject, composition, color, etc. By doing so I was free to explore. The result became a kind of 'mothership'. From it I drew a new visual vocabulary and the first works on paper I made surprised me. The language was spare and the paint application more matte and flat. I decided to let it all unfold eventually producing the work seen here.

The subjects that inspire me are chemistry (an old passion of mine), mathematics, language, biology, storytelling, dreams, etc. They all feed my imagination and support my practice.
