OCT 5 - 28, 2017
Opening Reception:
Thursday, OCTOBER 5, 6 - 8pm
Larry Calkins is a mixed media painter and sculptor, whose preferred mediums are materials and objects that are somehow connected with the past: rusted metal, found cloth, or scraps of wood. His sophisticated encaustic works prove mastery over a difficult medium, revealing a distinct personal style that can only be developed through years of practice. Infused in his work is a fascination with history, his own ancestry, and a resourcefulness derived from his origins in rural Oregon.
Calkins was born in Corvallis, Oregon, and grew up in a remote logging community. For over twenty years he has shown his work at galleries throughout the United States, including Washington, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Tennessee.
"The Big Elk river runs like a silver thread through my veins and Tiger Mountain chimes my heart.
My art speaks to these two worlds, my first home and my second. In all my work I turn personal history into fables where animals walk upright and speak in the voices of my friends and family. They relate their lives in small dramas – sometimes they make sense and sometimes they do not.
Ravens and rabbits, elephants and mice carry on complex relationships often reversing roles, sometimes friends, sometimes lovers, often enemies. Always in flux."
