EROSION:
BILL BABER + REBECCA SHORTLE

JULY 5 - 28, 2018
Opening Reception:
Thursday, July 5, 6 - 8pm

BILL BABER is a mixed-media painter and sculptor, who utilizes reclaimed bronze and fused glass to forge fragments into poetic compositions, shaped by discard and destiny.

I press my lids for novel roles, with gray dew morning sight.
I redirect internal shades, with highlights of the day.
I mix a palette's level spread, a fix I do not know.
My patience tempers choice and my play discovers loss.
Midnight roles uncover canopies of rest and reason.
Egos are unearthed.
Distant eyes soothe our walks every day.
Across all the seasons I watch the finch feeding past the window.
Decisions with reserve you flutter, aim colors, and life gets better.

REBECCA SHORTLE Reflecting her love for scientific process and experimentation, Rebecca Shortle layers acrylic mediums and pigments over time, resulting in almost gelatinous surfaces reminiscent of microscope slides, or patterns of refracting light in shallow waters.

"My fascination with the natural world and its laws, forces, patterns, and phenomena has long been a driving force in my life. I have pursued it academically in research science, artistically in painting and sculpture, casually in nonfiction reading and in natural observation, and professionally in chemical and biotech patent law. My years of formal and informal study provide me with a lens through which I view the world; I cannot see shapes and patterns in nature without considering the forces from which they resulted, or without noting ratios and patterns universal to living and non-living things. This fascination informs the subject matter of my paintings as well as the process."
