Ceramics Exhibition featuring:
KOREN CHRISTOFIDES, SAM CHUNG, and GUNYOUNG KIM Within each artist's distinct, visual language lives a deeper exploration into identity through personal mythology. While fundamentally rooted in ideas or traditions known, personal idiom is re-invented by the mind's eye.

KOREN CHRISTOFIDES
An extensive traveler throughout Western Europe, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Iran, Columbia, and Mexico, Koren Christofides has always been drawn to forms of ancient cultures and has used the world of mythologies to inform her work. Beyond working on the Fables of La Fontaine, Christofides has also drawn from the Contes (erotic tales) of La Fontaine, specifically ‘The King of Africa’s Bride’. In recent works she has focused on proverbs, specifically those about women from all around the world.

SAM CHUNG
In an effort to challenge perceptions of what is familiar versus what is new, Sam Chung approaches the vessel with as much intention as intuition. By exploring relationships within the larger history of ceramic art, he reinterprets notions of culture, identity, and time, to build his own narrative.
"Clouds are a ubiquitous symbol depicted in traditional Korean art ... This cultural reference is intended to serve as an anchor to point towards my own ethnic lineage, but also question my perception of belonging within or outside of it."

GUNYOUNG KIM
Contemplating inner states of being and the subconscious, Gunyoung Kim is interested the side of humanity that is subtle and spiritual. Through facial expression, gesture, staging, disfigurement, color, and texture, she explores different ways in which emotions contain stories within time and space. Like poetry, the meanings within her own work may not always be obvious, but can be implied in various ways.
